US President Donald Trump's announcement that a 30 percent tariff would be imposed on products from the European Union (EU) has drawn criticism from Washington's European allies. German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche called for a pragmatic solution to end the "trade war" tensions in a statement on Saturday.

The Minister emphasized that the tariffs will have a significant negative impact on exporting European companies, saying, "They will also have a heavy impact on the economy and consumers on the other side of the Atlantic."

In a written statement, Reiche emphasized that "a pragmatic solution must be reached in the negotiations urgently."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also reacted to the tariffs. Von der Leyen, in a statement on her X account, said, "A 30 percent tariff on EU exports will negatively impact businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic." The Commission President stated that they would work to reach an agreement by August 1st and emphasised that they were ready to protect EU interests on the basis of proportionate countermeasures.
